Mahakali River Training Project was established at Darchula district head quarter after massive flood in Mahakali River on 3-5 Ashar 2070 (June 17, 2013). This Project Office was estalisshed to protect the left bank of Mahakali River at Vulnerable locations within the Darchula District.
Mahakali River is the border river. It’s basin area lies in Nepal & India and has a total basin area of 14871 km upto Upper Sharda Barrage, about 34 Percent of which lies in Nepal. The total catchment area is 17818 km2 upto lower sharada Barrage.
After the June 17, 2013 massive flood in the Mahakali River immediate protection works were started during the monsoon. Some toe protection works with studs were constructed in the possible vulnerable sites especially in the core area of Khalanga namely Dashrathnagar, Chhangru, Ghat Bazar, Tikar Kheda, Main administrative area (Police, Telecom, School etc), Hospital complex, Galphai bazar, Ghatta area, Namaskar etc. as an emergency response.The detailed study was carried out for the preparation of master paln for the protection of left bnk of Mahakali RIver within the Darchula District. According to the nature of vurnability and importance of the location following two types of protection measure are being proposed.

1. RCC Retaining wall with counterfort, RCC cut-off at Toe and Studs with PCC Launching Block at Core Area ( District Headquarter-Lasku Khola to Nameskar Mandir)
2. Gabion Toe Wall protection and Studs at Other Area  of District.

As per Master Plan the Project was designed to complete within FY 2074/75 and depending on variability within the area the project is being implemented in two phases : Phase I and Phase II

1. Project started on F/Y 2070/071 and planned to complete in 2074/075 ( 5 years)
2. The Project Cost as per Master Plan : 3,05,57,00,000.00

Works mainly consists of R.C.C. counterfort Retaining Wall, Concrete GravityWall, PCC with Lunching Block, Gabion Toe Wall protection, Environmental Protection etc.
